If I want to get an individual health insurance policy do I need to show proof of prior insurance?

I’m looking to take out an individual policy w/ Blue Cross or another provider. I last had insurance 3 months ago but not since. What will my new insurance company need from what I had in the past. Should it be okay to just tell them I had insurance w/ Aetna or will they need proof usually?
